The Minneapolis Sound originated during the late 1970s with the rising of Prince, The Time and associated artists. The genre is characterized by funk mixed with rock, soul, jazz and pop. Heavy use of keyboards took the place of keyboards. Other notables musicians include Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Morris Day, Andre Cymone, Jellybean Johnson, Monte Moir and Sounds of Blackness.
